How to Find a Lost or Stolen MacBook?

The sooner you take action, the better. The initial actions to do are as follows:
Change your passwords: Update your Apple ID password, email, bank accounts, and any other sensitive accounts you accessed from your MacBook.
Report to the police: File a police report to document the theft and aid in recovery efforts. Provide them with your MacBook’s serial number, located on the original box or receipt.
Monitor for suspicious activity: Keep an eye on your accounts for unauthorized access. Contact your bank immediately if you see anything concerning.
Contact Apple Support: Reach out to Apple Support to report the theft. They may offer additional assistance and track your device.
A Step towards : Find My Macbook :-
You might have enabled this (Find My) feature before losing your MacBook in order to locate it.
Let’s take a quick look back at how you might have configured your Find My feature :
Steps to Set up  – Find My feature :
Steps:
- Open System Settings: Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select “System Settings”.
- Enable Location Services:
- Go to “Privacy & Security” in the sidebar.
- Click on the “Privacy” tab.
- If the lock icon on the bottom left is locked, click it and enter your administrator password.
- In the list of apps, find “Location Services” and make sure it’s turned on.
- Turn on Find My Mac:
- Go back to the sidebar in System Settings and click on your name (or “Sign in with Apple ID” if you haven’t signed in yet).
- Select “iCloud”.
- Scroll down (or click “Show All” if necessary) and find “Find My Mac”.
- Click the checkbox next to “Find My Mac” to turn it on.
- You might be prompted to allow Find My Mac to use your location. Click “Allow”.
- Set Up Offline Finding:
- By default, Offline Finding should be enabled, but you can double-check.
- In the “Find My Mac” settings (from step 3), click “Options”.
- Make sure “Enable Offline Finding” is checked.
That’s it! Your Find My Mac feature is now set up.

- Locate your MacBook: Sign in to iCloud.com/find on another device or use the Find My app. Select “All Devices” and choose your MacBook.
- Take action: Depending on the situation:
- Play sound: If nearby, use this feature to locate your MacBook by sound.
- Lock it remotely: Prevent unauthorized access by setting a passcode and displaying a message with your contact information.
- Erase it remotely: As a last resort, if you think you can’t recover it, erase all your data to protect your privacy.
Finding an Offline MacBook:
Apple’s Find My can still locate an offline (asleep or turned off) MacBook using Bluetooth signals from nearby Apple devices. However, this requires:
- Another Apple Device: An iPhone or iPad with Find My enabled.
- A little luck: Other Apple devices must be within range of your MacBook for offline tracking to work.
